Vanguard’s growing focus on governance

As the steward of long-term shareholder value for more than 20 million investors, listed companies can increasingly expect fund manager Vanguard to take more public positions on climate risk disclosure and gender diversity on boards.

That’s the word from Vanguard chairman and CEO Bill McNabb in an open letter to directors of public companies worldwide.

According to its recently published Investment Stewardship 2017 Annual Report, the 12 months to end June 2017 were very busy for Vanguard’s Investment Stewardship team. It cast more than 171,000 individual votes on behalf of its funds at around 18,900 shareholder meetings across 67 countries.
